Marion Vriens - Pulp becomes fiction

The statues and wall sculptures depict powerlessness and might, man and society.

I take my inspiration from the tales of “ordinary” people that live in my street or in any given city anywhere in the world. Everyday subjects that are both everyday occurrences or universal and sometimes even refer to age-old themes.

Using body language and facial expressions I portray in the expressions of the sculptures what is normally invisible as a part of movement. Caught in the moment I lay bare emotions and feelings that ring true.

I build my statues on a wooden frame or wire mesh with paper, textiles and/or other waste materials. The materials used play an important role in the expressions I want to install in the statues. The sculpture’s expression changes when made from a different material. It makes a difference if a sculpture is made using concrete, paper or candle wax.

Occasionally I use texts in my work. It is part of an ongoing experiment. Columns of texts or individual words as pictorial elements in the sculpture and/or as contextual reference.

The combination of body language and facial expressions, material en texts becomes the story. Pulp becomes fiction
